About Us

Here at Cedar Knolls, we strive to produce quality mastiffs; superior is health, size and temperment. We spend much of our time caring, and enjoying the company of our mastiffs, they are apart of our family first and foremost. We value the dedication, and gentleness of a mastiff, and could not imagine our home without several of them lying at our feet.
We breed for the betterment of the breed, selecting qualities and traits from each dog that is desirable, researching pedigree, and breeding to get top quality pups.  We never breed in the summer heat, it is too stressful on the dogs, and the heat is too extreme for our mothers to be comfortable, while pregnant or nursing.
Our puppies are whelped into a family who loves and adores them before they even make their debut into the world. They are given the best jump start possible, to insure you will get the top quality puppy you requested. Here are some things we do to promise your puppy the best life possible:

     * At age 4-5 weeks they are weaned with either softened Pro-Plan Giant breed puppy or similar dog food.

     * They are handled multiple times DAILY, by children, adults, visitors, etc.

     * They are allowed to have outside experiences: i.e cats, other dogs, etc.

     *  They have begun to learn good manners

     *  They receive every precautionary shot, worming, vet check available

     * Their weights and diets are maintained every day, from day one until the day they leave.

     * They are given natural chew treats, and by age 7-8 weeks are given chicken necks, tripe, pork loins, etc. In addition to their top grade (Pro-Plan/Diamond Naturals) dog food.

     *  Puppies are given baths, clipped, have their mouths/feet/tails handled, so they are accustomed to these happenings.

    * Transitions from litter to life on their own, is made as easy as possibly with a litter rag, and individual play times with members of the family.

Mastiffs are our passion, it is a love for our dogs, and a love for the breed. We welcome anyone to visit our home and our mastiffs, we take great pride in our babies. Feel free to call, stop by or email we love to talk mastiff anytime!

A little Mastiff History...

Originally bred to be war dogs, the English Mastiff can be traced back over 5,000 years to Asian Arts and Babylonian artifacts dated around the time of 1100 BC!  They are even included in the writings of Herodotus, Caesar, Marco Polo, Chaucer, and Shakespeare.
The mastiffs war escapades, though unimaginable for the present day mastiff owner, includes the mastiff fighting along side the British against the Romans, laying down their lives for the sacrifice of their men. In favor, the men the mastiffs protected organized public fightings with mastiffs against lions, bears, tigers, bulls, boars, and even dropping a grown elephant to its knees!  Their reputation as ferocious fighters was soon overridden by their loyalty and companionship. In later years, the Mastiff was bred less to attack and more as a guardian and pet. When visitors came to the castles, the Mastiff was trained to walk close to the guest and lean heavily against them and growl. This was a show of, “I’m watching you!” rather than, “I’ll eat you,” and if you’ve ever had a 250 lb. dog lean all its weight against you and lowly growl, you can see that it’s enough to know that you’re on notice and best behave yourself.
When times became rough in Europe, and people were not able to afford such large dogs, the mastiff numbers dwindled severly, and were crossbred with smaller, more efficient dogs. It was not even until 1873 that pedigrees were begining to be kept and the breed pieced back together.

By 1912, there were no registered Mastiffs in the United States. A breeder from Canada named C. W. Dickinson from Wingfield Kennels is responsible for keeping the Mastiff breed alive, and today, almost all Mastiffs have descended for Wingfield’s breeding! In 1929, the Mastiff Club of America was formed, and today, America has more Mastiffs than anywhere else in the world.

That is a long, sticky drool!!

No wonder the mastiff is such a noble breed.
